In 1947 The United Nations General Assembly determined that Palestine should be partitioned into a Jewish state and an Arab state with Jerusalem an independent city. In 1948 The state of Israel declared independence. Jewish fighters captured the western part of Jerusalem while Jordanian troops captured the eastern city and Old City.
